Name Game

I'm always curious to hear how people come up with their children's names.  I remember a saying that it's best to choose a name that you're not ashamed to yell across the playground (cause that's EXACTLY what you'll be doing).  "Milton!  It's time to go!" just doesn't quite sound right, not to mention the ridicule that poor child will face from his peers.

Like many pre-teen girls, I read "The Babysitter's Club" book series in late elementary school.  Only one of the girls had a steady boyfriend whose name was Logan.  I loved the name then and continued to see the name through the years.  It means "from the little hollow" and is a beautiful Gaelic name.  Thankfully, Kevin liked the name too and that was our only choice for our first son's name.  I wanted Logan to have Kevin's middle name of James (my dad's first name as well) and there you have it!

Coming up with a name for our second son was more difficult.  Shortly after Logan was born, Kevin mentioned that he wished we would have considered Matthew for Logan's middle name.  It was a little late, but Matthew was a good middle name if we had another son, I just thought it was too common for a first name.  Bryson was our first choice, but a lady at Kevin's work named her son Bryson and we couldn't be copy cats!  Next was my personal favorite, Tristan.  That was quickly vetoed by pretty much everyone in my family, including Kevin.  Too feminine sounding.  Maybe one day I can have a golden retriever and name him Tristan!  Anyway, we told everyone that we were not going to reveal our boy and girls names until the sonogram where we found out the sex.  Mainly because we hadn't made up our minds yet!  Finally, Kevin and I sat down and looked through a baby name website under the C's.  The name Colin/Collin stood out from the page.  Bingo!  Kevin didn't care either way how we spelled it.  I chose Collin with the two ll's because I didn't want our child to go through life with people asking, "So...is it Colon or Collin" (thanks Colin Powell)!

What is interesting about the names we chose is that our boys actually look like their names!  Kevin said the boys must have heard their names in the last few weeks of the pregnancy and worked on their features to match their given names.
